Hunan International Forum on Resource and Environment

Presented by Canada China Business Council (CCBC)
Date: April 17-18, 2009
Location: Changsha, Hunan

Who should attend: Environmental companies, renewable energy companies, water and waste treatment, urban planning and infrastructure firms.

Purpose: Showcase Zhuzhou, Xiantian and Changsha and review the opportunities in various projects created in part by China’s stimulus plan and other programs. This is a developing area, and many infrastructure programs are needed, so companies here crave technology.

Matchmaking opportunities: We have a list of 105 opportunities looking for investment and /or co‐operation. Detailed descriptions are available for interactions prior to the conference to enable initial discussions. Further meetings will occur during the conference. While the environment and infrastructure are prominent, there are many opportunities across the wide industrial range.

The Whistler Forum: Taking Leadership on Corporate Social Responsibility in Canada and China

The Whistler Forum is preparing to take a delegation of 15 to 20 Canadians to participate in a four day seminar workshop on Taking Leadership on Corporate Social Responsibility in Canada and China at China Excutive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP) this October 20 to 24, 2009. We invite you and or others you may know to join us.

This initiative is timely given the federal government's tabling of CSR Strategy (Building the Canadian Advantage: A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Strategy for the Canadian International Extractive Sector); and the visit to China of our Trade Minister Stockwell Day and Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon.

The Whistler Forum has worked over the past three years engaging in dialogue and leadership on a range of matters with various individuals and groups in China and the Asia Pacific. In September of 2008 we took a group of 25 from the Vancouver/Whistler region to Beijing, Mt Huangshan and Shanghai for first-hand experiences of China and for discussions on sustainability and accessibility planning for communities. We also participated in two days of seminars at CELAP and deepened the Forum's relationships with Mr Jiang, Director General of the Department of International Exchange.  This was my third visit to CELAP with discussions each time exploring ways to further the knowledge of and best practises for CSR in both countries.

For the October 20 to 24 workshop seminars at CELAP, the first two days involve presentations on CSR in China with researchers and experts at CELAP who are about to publish their work. The next two days will involve presentations on CSR in Canada with dialogue on taking leadership in reciprocal ways moving forward. Given the CSR-related work of the Canadian Business Ethics Research Network and the Asia Pacific Dispute Resolution Project at the University of British Columbia, we are collaborating to focus on learning from new and emerging case studies particularly in the extractive sector.

Our three fold goals are: 1) to build a stronger relationship with CELAP and through them officials and CSR researchers in China; 2) to provide up-to-date policy directions and exchange of current knowledge of CSR in both ocuntries; 3) advance understandings of and compliance measures for CSR in the global context.

The entire cost from Monday evening October 19 to Saturday morning October 24, including five nights accommodation at CELAP, all meals, material and seminars is $1,700. This does not include airfare to Shanghai Pudong, nor evening visits to other Shanghai sites.

We currently have six participants committed to joining in this delegation and international exchange on CSR in Canada and China at CELAP. I look forward to contacting you to discuss further whether you and or others you know can join us for this timely and unique opportunity.
