All proceeds over and above the operating costs of this event will be donated to the Yunnan Mountain Heritage Foundation in Western China.
Shangri-La, capital of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is tucked into the high mountains at the far western end of Yunnan Province. At 3000 meters, it is an area rich in cultural diversity, beautiful landscape, and important pilgrimage sites for travelers throughout the Buddhist world.
Although these assets have made it a desirable tourist destination, much of the population remains isolated from the recent economic boom found in other parts of China. In Shangri-La, small rural mountain farming communities grow barley, potatoes and other seasonal crops as well as maintain herds of yak and cattle, much as they have done over the past centuries.
Yunnan Mountain Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization founded to protect and promote Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Eco-Tourism in Shangri-La, Yunnan. The Women’s Handicraft Center, Old Town Heritage Building Protection Project, The Shangri-la Institute, Friends of Shangri-la are just of a few of the projects that YMHF has undertaken.
YMHF annually sponsors interns to assist with local projects including the free summer English teaching program for rural children. Volunteers have made a big difference in YMHF projects in bringing international expertise to this remarkable region to ensure that development happens in an environmentally & socially sustainable manner.
